• Enhanced German and Spanish medical terminology with 40+ new terms such as Katheterpflege, Kreatininwerte, NTHi.
• Enriched shared cross-language dictionaries with 60+ new proper-name entries for companies, products, and locations such as Nintendo, Panamera, Rotterdam, and iOS.
• Improved spelling suggestion prioritization for Dutch with patterns designed to support users with dyslexia, covering cases such as zecht → zegt, leew → leeuw, etc.
• Improved Dutch spellchecking for hyphenated words, such as compounds with vowel combinations or joining -s-. Correctly written words like these are no longer flagged as errors.
• Improved suggestions when two words are typed without a space, such as prepositions, conjunctions, or pronouns glued to other words. For example, tojest is now split into the correct words in Polish. This improvement covers 40 languages, including German, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Swedish, Polish, Croatian, Slovenian, Turkish, Welsh, and Irish.
• Improved suggestions from the third-party grammar engine for Greek. Spelling and style issues are now labeled and highlighted correctly, instead of all appearing as grammar issues.

AI writing assistant

• Added Japanese support to the AI writing assistant.

Style guide

• Updated dependencies in the AI proofreading engine’s model-serving pipeline to reduce security risk: torch (2.5.1 → 2.9.1), transformers (4.48.1 → 4.57.6), and accelerate (1.3.0 → 1.15.0).
• Reduced the attack surface of the third-party grammar engine (LanguageTool) by removing 15 unused third-party libraries, including unneeded networking, caching, and cryptography components.

WProofreader core v6.18.1 improves AI-based proofreading accuracy, adds visible descriptions for AI-based spelling corrections, and makes feature settings reflect actual availability for the selected language and configuration. 🛠 Enhancements

WProofreader JS core (v3.46.6137)

• Improved the feature settings experience. Controls now reflect actual feature availability for the selected language and configuration.
• Features that are unsupported or disabled on the backend can now appear as unavailable instead of showing as enabled.
• Added visible spelling suggestion descriptions. Classified AI-based spelling corrections now show a specific message in the UI in English, Spanish and German.
• Improved issue count accuracy in badge. Corrections disabled through the disabledRules options no longer count as mistakes.
• Added an “Apply all” button in Proofread in dialog mode that accepts every found suggestion at once, after you expand the dialog window fully.

API and configuration

• Extended the get_info API with information about feature availability, including autocomplete, autocorrect, and style, allowing integrations to better reflect backend configuration.
• Added an API getdicts action for retrieving user dictionaries, letting administrators list all dictionaries in an account. Each response returns up to 1,000 dictionaries. If more exist, a warning indicates that the list is truncated.

Localizations

• Added interface language list localization for Kurdish (Turkey) and Thai.

Application server

• Removed the deprecated AdditionalLang server configuration option, which no longer had any effect.
• Added support for disabling or enabling additional dictionaries individually in the server configuration, such as veterinary dictionary.

AI-based proofreading

• Enhanced Spanish AI-based proofreading to have better performance with underscores, unit changes and decimal separators.
• Improved German AI-based proofreading to provide better performance on texts with parentheses and non-standard quotation marks written as >><< using greater-than and less-than signs.

Grammar

• Added support for disabling individual proofreading rules or rule categories on the server side, so, for example, dash rules can be turned off correctly in every instance for cloud users.
• Improved English grammar processing for capitalization patterns in technical identifiers (such as ID casing) and common word confusion pairs such as sou versus you.
• Improved the handling of Swedish bil, art, and kol so if they are used at the end of the sentence and a following word is written in lowercase, we would suggest capitalizing that word. For example, Hon körde sin bil. vägen var nästan tom., the suggestion is Vägen.

Spelling

• Expanded dictionaries with 840+ new words across English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, French, and Greek, covering abbreviations, technology terms, common words, proper names, and linguistics terms.
• Enriched cross-language dictionaries with 150+ proper names and abbreviations, covering companies and software applications such as Etsy, Depop, WebText, and USB-C.
• Enhanced medical terminology for English, German, and Spanish with 120+ new terms, such as trichogram and hyporexia in English, anatómicamente in Spanish, and Implantatprüfung in German.
• Added an English veterinary dictionary, disabled by default, covering 180+ terms and abbreviations such as GDV, oclacitinib, and Drontal. It covers all available English dialects and administrators can enable it as needed in self-hosted set-up. For cloud users, now it can be provided upon request to [email protected]. It incorporates terms from AGROVOC (FAO) combined with additional entries.
• Extended measurement-unit abbreviation spelling suggestions, such as 2GB to 2 GB and 3GHz to 3 GHz, to uppercase and mixed-case abbreviations across many Latin-alphabet languages.
• Added a rule for German (de_DE, de_AT) that lets administrators require the eszett (ß) instead of ss. By default, both forms are accepted; disabling ALLOW_SS_INSTEAD_OF_ESZETT makes ss spellings incorrect and suggests the ß form instead, and AI suggestions follow the same setting.
• Improved handling of hyphenated words. Words that start with a hyphen, such as -anforderungen, are now recognized as correct when added to a dictionary with a leading hyphen, for most supported languages, except a few that don’t use hyphens this way, such as Arabic, Hebrew, and Japanese.

Style

• Enhanced style rule precision in Spanish by adding contextual awareness to foreign-word suggestions. Suggestions for terms like power now exclude medical contexts such as Doppler, based on user feedback.

AI writing assistant

• Reduced the minimum text length required to use the AI writing assistant from 100 to 30 characters, making AI-powered text actions available for shorter text.

Autocomplete

• Improved autocomplete language handling by using the detected language as a fallback when automatic language detection has insufficient context, such as with very short text.
• Improved authorization handling so autocomplete and autocorrect respect the languages enabled for a subscription.
• Updated autocomplete authorization so it’s available only when at least one applicable check type is enabled for the language.
• Improved autodetect authorization logic, so requests aren’t incorrectly rejected when an applicable check type is available for an authorized language.
• Continued improving the filtering of autocomplete suggestions that contain sensitive, unexpected, or discriminatory language.

🐞 Bug fixes

• Spelling engine (French): Suggestions incorrectly recommended removing the narrow nonbreaking space before punctuation, such as question marks and colons
• Spelling engine: Hyphenated words following a number, such as 5-wöchigen or 16-years-old, were incorrectly flagged as misspelled

• Updated logback-classic from 1.5.38 to 1.6.3 to fix a directory traversal vulnerability in the application server’s logging component.
• Updated Jackson Databind from 2.18.9 to 2.18.10, addressing multiple vulnerabilities in the application server, including unsafe reflection, untrusted deserialization, and uncontrolled resource allocation.

WProofreader core v6.17.1 fixes an issue where native browser spellcheck didn’t turn back on correctly during startup.

🐞 Bug fixes

• WProofreader JS core: When autoStartup was set to false, the restoreNativeSpellCheck option was ignored on initialization, leaving native browser spellcheck disabled. Native browser spellcheck now restores correctly in this configuration. Review configuration options for more details.

Extended the exception list to recognize the nonbreaking hyphen and U+2010 hyphen, preventing valid hyphenated forms from being incorrectly flagged.
• Updated Italian grammar logic with 6 modified rules. Fixed article rules for anglicisms where the plural can share the same written form as the singular, such as meeting, standard, and disambiguated rules for homophones, such as hai vs ai, ha vs a.

Spelling

• Expanded dictionaries with 970+ new words across English, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian, covering abbreviations, affixes, anglicisms, biology, business, common terms, economics, food, legal terms, linguistics, location, measurements, medical, neologisms, other languages, proper names, religion, science, specialized terminology, and technology.
• Enriched shared cross-language dictionaries with 170 proper names and abbreviations, such as XOF, OpenOffice, Eurocontrol, etc.
• Enhanced medical and scientific terminology for English and Spanish with 64 new words, including terms such as bromobenzoates and fCJD in English, and urotelio in Spanish.

🛡 Security

• Micrometer upgrade: Updated Micrometer from 1.15.12 to 1.16.7 to address two Snyk-reported vulnerabilities. The update fixes a high-severity memory leak in metric collection that could affect registry stability. Also updated the Prometheus integration dependency to 1.16.7 for compatibility.
• Netty upgrade: Updated netty-handler from 4.1.136.Final to 4.1.137.Final to address two Snyk-reported vulnerabilities. The fixes address a high-severity hostname mismatch issue in certificate validation and a critical exception handling flaw. This update benefits all users relying on secure network communication.

⚠️ Important change for self-hosted clients

• Self-hosted customers must reactivate their license after every WProofreader version upgrade, starting with v6.16.0. This confirms the upgraded version complies with the license’s version restrictions. Reactivate your license right after upgrading to avoid service interruption. • Introduced a new v4 license format that supports product grants, usage limits, and version restrictions. Licenses now define product entitlements and upgrade eligibility directly.
• Added the new license_status API command for retrieving license information. Review License status documentation for more details.
• Improved license expiration reporting to show exact remaining time in days, hours, minutes, and seconds. Status messages now use clearer License expires in wording.
• Added a license expiration warning during the final 24 hours before expiration, providing an additional reminder to renew the license before service interruption.

Deployment

• Docker containers sometimes failed to activate the license after restarting with a new license ticket and an empty license.xml file. This now works correctly, including for setups that store the license directory in a mounted volume.

• Updated the third-party grammar engine (LanguageTool) to the 2026-08-03 release.
• Improved English grammar rules with clearer corrections and fewer false positives:
  • Fixed a false comma suggestion before and in sentences using the fixed phrase every now and then

🛡 Security

• Updated micrometer-core from 1.7.12 to 1.15.12 to fix CVE-2026-40984, a high-severity denial-of-service vulnerability affecting LanguageTool dependencies bundled with WProofreader.
• Also switched to micrometer-registry-prometheus-simpleclient to preserve compatibility with the existing Prometheus integration.

WProofreader JS core (v3.44.6097)

• Added a new applyAllSuggestions command that accepts every suggested correction in one go, instead of applying them one by one. It’s available now for developers to add to their setup; a ready-to-use button in the interface is coming in a future release.
• Missing-period reminders no longer appear in headings and list items by default, cutting down on suggestions that don’t apply in these contexts. Review disabledRulesPerEnvironment in the configuration documentation for more information.
• Improved how German abbreviations with spaces and capital letters (such as z. B.) are recognized, so they no longer trigger incorrect capitalization suggestions after them.
• Improved handling of the “Ignore domain names” option. Domain names are now consistently skipped, even in cases where they were previously still flagged as spelling mistakes. For more details, review Spelling ignore options documentation.

Application Server

• Removed obsolete hardware validation messages from application server logs. Hardware hasn’t been used for license validation for some time, but the related messages remained and could cause confusion during troubleshooting.

Deployment

• Improved Docker build reliability across Kaniko, Buildah, and the classic Docker builder, including setups that override values with --build-arg. Build arguments now carry through properly to every stage of a multi-stage build, fixing cases where later stages couldn’t see them.

AI-based proofreading

• Dash-related suggestions from the AI proofreading engine are now easier to identify and turn off, which is useful if your style guide restricts or avoids dashes. For more information on rules, review information on English AI proofreading categories and rules.
• In addition to spelling and grammar, AI proofreading suggestions can now also be classified as style issues, so they’re labeled more accurately. Review English AI proofreading style categories and rules.
• Added curated descriptions for English AI-based proofreading corrections. Our linguistic team prepared these descriptions, making it easier to understand why a suggestion was made.

Grammar

• Suggestions from the third-party grammar engine are now correctly labeled as grammar, spelling, or style issues, so they’re highlighted the right way. Previously, everything from this engine showed up as a grammar issue, even when it wasn’t.
• Updated LanguageTool to the 2026-07-14 release.
• Improved recognition of German words that can function as either a verb or an adjective, such as strukturierte. Previously, some of these were only recognized as a verb, which could cause the comma rule to misread the sentence structure and incorrectly suggest removing a valid comma.
• Improved consistency across rules names so that turning a specific grammar rule on or off now applies the same way, no matter which checking engine handles it.

Spelling

• Dutch now recognizes words with apostrophes, such as ‘s-Hertogenbosch, as correctly spelled.
• Improved spelling suggestions for German abbreviations that need a space between their two parts, such as correcting z.B. to z. B.
• Added 640+ of new words and terms across English, German, Spanish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Dutch, Thai, Greek, and Portuguese. They are covering everyday vocabulary as well as specialized fields like science, business, and technology.
• Expanded the shared cross-language dictionary with 30+ new proper names and abbreviations, including companies, products, and organizations, such as Canon, Ltd, and Rakuten. Additionally, added it as an additional dictionary for Greek spell check.
• Added 550 new medical terms for English, German, and Spanish, including abbreviations and procedure names, such as hepatoscopy, Unkovertebralgelenke and USG.
• Expanded English dialect support with 17 new dialectal pairs, such as hematoporphyrin (American) and haematoporphyrin (British).
• Improved 40+ spelling and autocorrect suggestions across English, Spanish, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Catalan, and the shared cross-language dictionary. Targeting common misspellings, proper names, and abbreviations, such as llm → LLM.

Autocomplete

• Autocomplete now stops any output suggestions when the typed text contains words that can be considered strong swear language.

Languages

• Implemented spelling correction support for the Thai language.

🛡 Security

• Rangy library: We backported the upstream patch for CVE-2023-26102 into our forked Rangy library used in SCAYT3, closing the vulnerability while keeping it compatible with our fork.
• jackson-databind: We updated jackson-databind to 2.18.9 to fix CVE-2026-54515. This affects components that depend on jackson-databind, directly or transitively.
• ch.qos.logback: We updated ch.qos.logback from 1.5.25 to 1.5.35 to fix two deserialization vulnerabilities, CVE-2026-9828 and CVE-2026-10532. This affects components that depend on ch.qos.logback, directly or transitively.

🐞 Bug fixes

• Spelling engine: Elongated words, such as loooooooooooong, produced “No suggestions”

⚠️ Important change

• Improved word counting for multiple languages, including ones without spaces. Previously, words were identified using spaces and punctuation, causing entire sentences in languages such as Japanese and Chinese to be counted as a single word. WProofreader now uses ICU-based segmentation to count morphemes for these languages, providing more accurate word counts and language statistics. For example, わかんない is now counted as 3 morphemes (わか / ん / ない), rather than 1.

WProofreader JS core (v3.43.6079)

• Added a Greek version of the AI writing assistant disclaimer.

AI-based proofreading

• Claude Haiku 3.5 was replaced with Haiku 4.5 due to deprecation. Haiku 3.5 was previously the default model for most non-English text operations. Public extended access is available until March 19, 2026, with the model end-of-life scheduled for June 19, 2026. Find more details in the AWS Bedrock model lifecycle documentation.

We recommend updating to newer application versions that use prompts aligned with supported models.

• Updated language list localization, added missing translations, standardized language naming to Language (Country) (for example, English (UK)), and renamed Auto Detect language to Autodetect.
